A year after his father was killed, and with the help of an agent, writer David Wainwright began work on his debut novel, a debut that earned him the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction.
His first novel, “The End of the Road”, was a winner of the Newbery Medal, an awards ceremony given to best novel.
“It was the first time I had ever won,” Wainworth said of his first novel.
He won an Emmy for “Outstanding Drama Series” in 2011.
A book he wrote with his wife, Helen, won the 2016 National Book Award for nonfiction.
Wainwood also won the National Medal of Arts in 2015 and the James Beard Award in 2016.
His latest novel, the thriller “The First Season”, was published in June, followed by a collection of short stories, “Frozen in Time”.
He has won a Pulitzer Prize, a National Book Foundation award, the PEN/William H. Macy Humanities Medal, and a MacArthur Foundation award.
The National Book Festival honoured Wainwyll with the 2017 National Book Writing Award.
He said that the awards are a way to honour people whose work they admire.
“I don’t think you have to be famous or successful to win these things, because the only people who have ever had a shot at these things are people who make great work,” he said.
Wainworth was in his mid-30s when he decided to write about the Holocaust.

Hemingway’s “A Farewell to Arms” is nominated for the National Novel Writing Award, and his memoir of growing up in the Depression is nominated in the Booker Prize.
Fitzgerald’s “My Struggle” is named in the National Humanities Prize.
